The Better Mindset

The Art & Science of Getting Better at What Matters Most

Close the gap between the version of you that shows up and the version you know you’re capable of, 1 percent at a time. Available September 29, 2026.

Best is a finish line. Better is a direction.

You already have what you need. I’ve watched it walk into audition rooms, locker rooms, and boardrooms for thirty years, and the talent was never the problem.

The problem is the noise. Perfectionism that moves the goalposts every time you get close. The imposter voice that shows up in the quiet. The part of you that wants to understand every step before it will let you take one.

I wrote this book from inside the rooms where performance happens: the tunnel before the game, the set, the studio, the moment before the lights come on. It walks with you through the reps, through the door, into the spotlight, and through what comes after.

One breath. One rep. One percent at a time.

A road map for people who are done chasing perfect

Somewhere along the way, someone handed you a goal that sounds generous and turns out to be a trap: become your best self. Best is a destination. Destinations have finish lines. And once you’re aimed at a finish line, every stumble reads as failure and every detour feels like falling behind.

Giving your best right now was never the problem. Believing best is a place you arrive is.

The Better Mindset is a road map to clarity, worked backward from where you’re going instead of guessed forward from where you’ve been. It isn’t a ten-step program or a thirty-day challenge. It’s something quieter and more permanent: you, built one step, one rep, one percent at a time.

Wisdom in action

Knowing these ideas won’t change anything. Practicing them will. That’s the whole edge.

The book lives at the intersection of art and sport, where the tools that build great performers turn out to be the tools that build great athletes, leaders, and teams. Here’s what you’ll practice:

  • The 1 Percent Better System. How improvement actually compounds, and why “more, faster” is the surest way to burn out.
  • The Four Types of Mind. Positive, negative, neutral, and flow: what each gives you, what each costs you, and how to choose the one the moment needs.
  • Your Battle Cry. A phrase that holds under pressure because it’s built from evidence, not hype.
  • The Golden Hour. What to do in the window right after a performance, when the story you’ll carry forward gets written.
  • The Rings. The circles of support that decide how much you actually have to give.
  • Human Alchemy. The honest alternative to fake it till you make it.

When we know Better, we do Better.

About the author

Joseph Ari’el Towne

I don’t coach from the sidelines. For three decades I’ve worked inside the rooms where performance happens, as an actor, a coach, and a teacher who never stopped doing the work myself.

I learned the lesson at the center of this book the hard way. At twenty-one I walked into the audition I was sure would confirm me, carrying the news that my mother was in surgery. I didn’t get in. Weeks later, she died. I spent the next twenty years treating both as verdicts before I understood I’d been chasing the wrong thing: approval, dressed up as excellence.

Twenty-two years after that audition, with a career I was proud of, I picked a word for the year: Better. Then the world shut down, my marriage ended, and I found myself building this road map in the dark while I walked it. The Better Mindset is the map I wish I’d had.

Today I work at the intersection of art, sport, and leadership. I host The Better Mindset Podcast, and I’m committed to leaving the world Better than I found it, starting with whoever is in the room.
